A pioneer in extending oil change intervals ...

VAS 5054A A few years ago , GM introduced a system called the OLM system ( oil life monitor ) . This system had been tested since 1984 and was actually put in some Buick on a trial basis . The purpose of this system? To extend the oil change intervals and achieve boast a more maintenance-free vehicle. The OLM monitors crankcase temperature, humidity and events combustion chamber ( which is the real engine work is done running) . Followed by the elements around the engine, the system can measure the useful life of the oil to 10 % . After officially introduced the OLM with virtually no engine failure was attributed the OLM , GM changes its service recommendations to what they call an " enhanced maintenance program . " With the improved time , the driver only has to follow the dictates of the OLM and other scheduled services performed at prescribed intervals .

Ford Motor Company has followed GM oil change interval extended to March . In March 2007, Ford announced that they review intervals engine oil every 7500 miles . The reason ? Citing the article by the Associated Press dated 22 March 2007:

" Not only are modern oils better, modern engines are also better . You do not have carburetors metering poorly on winter mornings , tolerances are much tighter , and operating temperatures are generally a little warmer , helping to cook off the junk that accumulates in the oil. Ford maintains that his clients prefer a fixed amount of miles between changes . automaker also cites the environmental benefits that come from less waste oil, monetary savings , as well as in-depth as the positive aspects of the new recommendation tests. "

AUGOCOM T300 Yes oil is much better than it once was, the engines are better protected today with new lubricants , but the same logic still applies to the old oil filter : always use a good filter quality with the oil change. The filter is the storehouse of the dirt in the engine and when it does not work, the engine suffers internally . When dirt and dust are allowed to move on , in and on the surfaces of engine support, cylinder walls , crankshafts, piston rings , camshafts and virtually all metal contacts , they are damaged resulting tolerances wider oil , lower oil pressure and eventually premature engine failure.

Although I agree with the results of R & D over the years regarding the intervals between oil changes , I'm still disgusted to leave oil base oil in an engine for 7500 miles . I think I know too just based on personal experience.

So , yes , I have revised my thinking on the extension of oil drain intervals :

Here are my revised oil drain recommendations change based oils regular oil every 4-5 thousand miles and synthetic every 5-7 thousand kilometers.

There, those of you who for years have criticized me as being in the back pocket of oil companies to recommend 3000 mile oil changes , are you happy now ?
